Obstetric sonography/Ultrasound is done to ensure fetal well-being in the uterus. It uses sound waves to show the baby’s health and development while inside the uterus. These waves are not at all harmful to the baby.

Doppler Ultrasound helps to check the blood flow to the fetus and to ensure if the baby is receiving proper nutrition or not.

Obstetric Ultrasound Timeline

1st Scan: Between 6-8 weeks: –For the fetal location, cardiac activity and dating.

2nd Scan: 11-13 weeks: –USG Obstetrics (NT, NB Scan) to help in screening the risk for trisomies (Down’s, Patau’s, Edward’s) in the fetus and check for fetal anomalies.

3rd Scan: 18-20 weeks: –Target/Anomaly Scan to see the detailed structural development of the fetus. We check the heart, brain, spine, bowel, limbs and other structures.

4th Scan: ~30-32 weeks: –For fetal well-being, growth and liquor, placental location – Doppler can be done if required in this scan.

5th Scan: 38-40 weeks: –Helps in the estimation of fetal weight, fetal position, Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI), placental position and maturity. Also checks the blood flow between the placenta and baby and the position of the umbilical cord.

Also, additional scans might be needed in cases with high blood pressure, gestational diabetes mellitus, IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Retardation), twins, decreased fetal movements, or decreased amniotic fluid.
